How to use the NextGRID Cookbook

This page describes how to use the NextGRID Cookbook. The NextGRID Cookbook is a set of examples for using a Next Generation Grid Architecture. A culinary analogy is used, referring to ingredients, recipes and meals. The ingredients are a pool of software components that NextGRID has adopted in order to formulate its high-level architecture as it is depicted in the NextGRID Integration Plan. The recipes are ways of building/composing these ingredients to provide specific functionality in a Grid environment. In this way a new pool of (system of) components is created. By combining these further, one can implement higher level scenarios (until reaching the level of application scenarios) that could be regarded as ‘meals’. In other words the Cookbook is providing the guidelines for people to implement scenarios of a certain level by combining components from the pool.

Identification Instructions

The following guidelines explain how the readers can identify a particular component, recipe or meal.

Step 1

The reader should begin the navigation into the NextGRID results starting from the NextGRID Integration Plan. The first step would be for the user to familiarise themselves with the idea of using different components, recipes and meals in a specific architecture.

Step 2

The next step would be to navigate through the different Recipes and Meals so as to identify the particular use-case that best suits the reader's needs. A list of short descriptions of these entities (Meals Index and Recipes Index), followed by a set of keywords help towards that direction.

Step 3

Through the Recipes and Meals descriptions and specifications, the reader can narrow down his/her search to the basic Components following the respective links.

Alternatively

If the user is familiar with SOA Architectures, Grid Middlewares and even the NextGRID Architecture, then they can easily identify a particular software component that they are interested in, directly from the Component Index.

Usage Instructions

Once the readers identify the component or system of their interest, they can follow the guidelines (expressed in text and UML diagrams) so as to design or implement it. The guidelines include a general description of the functionalities, followed by a description of the structure and the respective interactions. The structure is a clear definition of the distinct architectural entities (objects or components) that comprise the component or the system. The interaction descriptions section explains not only how the abovementioned entities are interacting but also what kinds of interfaces are needed.

Cookbook Format

The Cookbook has been developed using a Wiki style, in order to be presented in a more readable way and also in order to promote collaborations. This makes the contributions and the update of the content easier. However, serious consideration is required before updating the content.
