Descriptions of Systems of Components

In the Cookbook, a culinary analogy is used, referring to ingredients, recipes and meals. The ingredients are a pool of software components that NextGRID has adopted in order to formulate its high-level architecture as it is depicted in the NextGRID Integration Plan. The recipes are ways of building/composing these ingredients to provide specific functionality in a Grid environment. In this way a new pool of (system of) components is created. By combining these further, one can implement higher level scenarios (until reaching the level of application scenarios) that could be regarded as ‘meals’. In other words the Cookbook is providing the guidelines for people to implement scenarios of a certain level by combining components from the pool.

The description of the recipes includes the statement of their purpose, that is, the goal that they are supposed to achieve. This statement is complemented by a description of how the intermediate components (ingredients) should interact with each other in order to realize this goal following the Generalised Specifications.
