Abstract:
SLALOM was a support action tackling the complexity of cloud computing SLAs and contracts through standardisation of the SLA and contract terms and a reference model for SLA management. In doing so it supported the adoption of cloud (SLA complexity is an identified barrier to adoption) and the exploitation of results from the cloud and SLA research communities, effectively by factoring in advances from the research sector into the SLALOM legal and technical models which are promoted as industry standards.
The project involved interaction with policy makers, cloud providers, research projects and cloud adopters from various areas. There has been significant interaction with the policy groups set up under the European Cloud Partnership and the working groups of the research community. The project ran for 18 months, focusing on three phases – definition of the models; consensus building; and adoption.

Development of the SLALOM technical model aligned with ISO standards, making use of the draft ISO 19086-2 standard fields, to which our work has in return contributed and shaped and with concrete examples from three commercial Cloud SLAs of completely different nature (AWS EC2, Microsoft Azure Storage and Google App Engine Data Store). A SLALOM-compliant SLO is ISO-compliant, but additionally it is clear, well defined and non-repudiable, i.e. its measurement cannot be contested. Therefore, it provides a practical way to cope with SLAs assuring alignment with the ISO standard which provides trustworthiness to organizations implementing SLALOM products.
